Bremen State and University Library (SuUB), like 200 other German universities, colleges and research institutions, did not renew its contract with the publishing house Elsevier ("Science Direct") at the end of 2017. This decision was taken in agreement with the management of the universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven to support the ongoing nationwide DEAL negotiations.
The current situation concerning access to journals and articles published by Elsevier:
- Members of the universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven continue to have online access to articles published until the end of 2017 if those journals were previously subscribed to both in paper and in digital form. A permanent access to the archives was part of that license agreement.
- All articles published since 2018 are no longer accessible.
- Also all articles from the approx. 1,500 journal titles of the so-called "Elsevier Freedom Collection" previously licensed by SuUB can no longer be accessed, since this license agreement did not extend to the archived journals.
What will happen now?
We are offering a free-of-charge provision of articles for all members of Bremen and Bremerhaven Universities. A valid library card is requested.
The order form is available here... We have also linked the order form to our individual catalogue entries for Elsevier journals and articles. For legal reasons only paper copies can be provided. We will inform you via e-mail as soon as the paper copy is ready for collection at our loan desk or at one of our branch libraries. The procurement will take approximately 7 days.
We hope that the DEAL negotiations with the publishing house Elsevier will be successfully concluded, so that you can access Elsevier journals online again.
